The states and districts that pay Biomedical Engineers the highest mean salary are Minnesota ($114,380), New Jersey ($113,140), Massachusetts ($105,580), Arizona ($103,650), and Connecticut ($102,970).
The survey, which looked at the first-year income of more than 45,000 graduates, found big differences in pay depending on the new hires’ college majors. Here’s a breakdown of average projected salaries by discipline for 2016:

Even as overall salaries have increased, some trends persist. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) majors, for example, consistently earn more than their humanities peers. On the highest end are the class of 2016’s engineers, who on average will earn $64,891. The top-paid engineers are petroleum engineers, projected to earn an average of $80,600 in their first year out of college, per 2015 data.
In addition, according to NACE, more than half of employers surveyed say they plan to hire STEM grads, making them among the most highly sought-after students in the class. After science and engineering, business majors take home the most money. They’re also the most in demand: more than three-quarters of employers put business majors on the list of grads they’d like to hire. Those in communications and social sciences fields, on the other hand, are looking at lower starting salaries this year than last.
As student debt levels climb, it’s increasingly important for incoming college students to choose not where they go to school but also what they study.

What is an engineering degree worth? Year after year, engineering jobs are paid the highest average starting salary. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) engineers have a median annual wage of $91,010 and the engineering field projects to have employment growth of nearly 140,000 new jobs over the next decade. The bottom line: it is well worth the time and effort it takes to become an engineer. So how much do engineers make?
On Tuesday, career site Glassdoor released its list of the highest-paying jobs — and physician topped the list, with a median salary of $193,415. “That’s over three-and-a-half times higher than the median U.S. base salary, currently at $53,950,” the Glassdoor report reveals. (Physician has topped the list since 2015, when Glassdoor began releasing the report.)Amanda Stansell, Glassdoor senior economic research analyst, tells MarketWatch that physician tops the list because it requires highly specialized skills and there is high demand for the jobs thanks in part to the high numbers of aging boomers.
Physician is just one of the many health care roles rounding out the top 10 — with pharmacy manager taking the No. 2 spot at $144,768 and dentist the No. 3 spot at $142,478. And if you’re considering a job in the health care field, Stansell points out that nurse practitioners (who make $109,481 and land on the No. 11 spot on this list) have an extremely high number of job openings, which signals “a strong need” for these professionals in the health care field.
Glassdoor’s report looks at the annual median base salary of jobs (controlling for factors such as location and seniority) that have at least 100 salary reports on the site from U.S.-based employees in the past year; C-suite jobs are excluded.

Tech jobs also made a strong showing in the top 10, with enterprise architects (they help ensure that a company’s IT systems align with its priorities and strategies) landing the No. 5 spot at $122,585 and software engineers at No. 7 with $114,163.
“A large contributor to this is the fierce fight for talent among tech companies,” Stansell says. “In our healthy labor market, tech workers are in the driver’s seat and companies have to offer competitive salaries.”
