Office 365 tenants share a single large logical infrastructure composed of hundreds of thousands of servers spread across multiple Microsoft data centers. Figure 1-1 shows the Office 365 data center deployment in early 2018. By its very nature, this overview is incomplete as it does not show some of the infrastructure that is under development.

In addition, it does not convey the deep investment made to create “edge” network termination points set up by Microsoft to bring user traffic quickly into Office 365 from all around the world or the internal network that transports Office 365 tenant data between the data centers.

Microsoft organizes the Office 365 data centers into fourteen regions. The data center region selected to host the data for new tenants is based on the country (location) selected by the tenant. Since the launch of Office 365 in 2011, Microsoft has gradually built out the Office 365 data center infrastructure with the intention of keeping data as local as possible (“in-geo data residency”) to accommodate customer choice and satisfy local regulations.

Where Office 365 once concentrated service delivery from larger data center regions such as Western Europe (with data centers in Ireland, Finland, Austria, and the Netherlands), localized service is now available in individual countries like France, Germany, and the U.K. The same is true in Asia-Pacific, where Office 365 services come from data centers in Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Australia, and China.

Apart from the ability to serve large customer populations, natural and economic advantages such as ambient temperature (to reduce the need for cooling) or availability of cheap hydro power influence data center placement. Obviously, security is of prime concern and Microsoft pays great attention to the physical security of the buildings (you will not find large signs proclaiming Office 365 or Microsoft anywhere) as well as cybersecurity for the data contained within the buildings.

There is no official data on how many servers are in Google data centers, but Gartner estimated in a July 2016 report that Google at the time had 2.5 million servers. This number is changing as the company expands capacity and refreshes its hardware.^[1]

The role of a compliance officer is under the umbrella of data center careers that aren't yet well-known, but it's a career that'll become increasingly important as states and countries iron out how to treat different types of data to be in line with the respective laws. This role is especially crucial for people who work in on-premise data centers associated with major companies.

Not being aware of a lack of compliance is not an excuse any business can use to avoid fines or other repercussions. However, bringing a compliance officer on board lets companies proactively steer clear of problems related to improper data handling. Compliance officers can also communicate with the respective bodies that publish the minimum requirements for data center compliance, ensuring facilities stay abreast of updates.

IT compliance is a complex topic that will only become more detailed once states enact laws related to the treatment of data. The rollout of the GDPR happened in May 2018 and forced many companies to change their data storage practices, often by speaking to their data center providers. Let’s start with the big question: how much can freelancers expect to earn? Although individual freelancing income differs from person to person, a recent Payoneer survey reveals that the average freelancer can expect to take home about $21 an hour. To quote Business News Daily:

A sole trader is someone who works as self-employed without operating through their own company or partnership. The amount of tax and National Insurance Contributions (NICs) that are due will depend on how much you earn as a freelancer and how much you are paid in your full-time job.

What Income Tax are you required to pay as a freelancer?

Your Income Tax will be calculated on your total earnings – combined income from employment and sole trader profits. You will need to pay Income Tax on any income above the personal allowance of £12,500 for the 2019/20 tax year.

Please be aware that if the profits earnt from freelancing push your total earnings into a higher rate tax band, you will be required to pay the higher rate tax.

How much National Insurance should you pay as a freelancer?

The amount of NI you pay on your income from your permanent employer will not change, but depending on how much you earn freelancing you may be required to pay Class 2 NI or Class 2 and 4 NI.

If your profits earnt from freelancing exceed £6,365 in the tax year you will have to pay Class 2 NI. This is a flat rate of £3.00 per week which is paid via direct debit to HMRC.

Class 4 NI – which is charged at 9% – will also be due on self-employed profits between £8,632 and £50,000. For all profits greater than £50,000 the Class 4 NI drops to 2%. Your Class 4 NI will be worked out when you submit your self-assessment tax return.
