Is WLAN and WiFi the same thing?

I consider that by WiFi you mean the regular WiFi network you connect your laptop or smartphones to.

Lets take a look at WiFi:
WiFi consists of a central part called Access Point (the regular router) and nodes (laptop, smartphones, etc). If the nodes want to be in network, they must be connected to Access Point. Nodes can not talk to each other directly. All network communication has to pass though Access point. That means, for your laptop to connect to smartphone and access files, Access point has to act as middle man. This is called Infrastructure mode of WiFi .
Make it simple Wifi means wireless internet. you can use internet within the wifi hospot range without LAN cables.
other hand WIFI direct is latest technology which can be found in usually samsung mobiles( also other mobiles) by which you can transfer songs, video, photos to other devices which are connected to same wifi hotspot. It doesnt use your internet data, it simply create a hot spot ,connect other device and transfer data.
Transfer speed is much more than Bluetooth transfer.you can transfer 1GB hd movie in less than 3-4 minute. If your mobile doesn't have wifi direct feature you can use android application like Xender and windows user can use shareIT.
