Digital Payments landscape in India has grown leaps and bounds and has gained tremendous momentum. Apart from the traditional payment mediums like RTGS/ NEFT/ECS etc. we have newer entrants like IMPS, Wallet services and Unified Payment Interface (UPI). UPI has emerged as one of the most preferred payment modes in the recent times. This is evidenced by RBI’s report which reported that UPI based payments have crossed 1 billion in terms of volume and Rs 1913 billion in terms of value in the month of October 2019.
The seamless interface of UPI has simplified digital payments and hence gained acceptance amongst the customers. However, it is being exploited by scammers and fraudsters to defraud the customers - by taking advantage of their ignorance and lack of knowledge on the usage of such new platforms. Therefore, one needs to be cautious about sharing any kind of banking/finance related information while interacting with an unknown person/or on unsolicited calls as it could be used by a fraudster. Here are some safe banking tips to be kept in mind to prevent such frauds:
· Never install unverified Apps: With easy availability of connectivity and smart phones, people keep downloading apps, some of which are sinister in nature. Customers are taken into confidence to download such apps by the fraudsters and once installed; these apps take control of the mobile. Some such apps are AnyDesk, Team-Viewer etc. One has to be on guard while installing any unsolicited Apps recommended by an unknown person / caller.
· Never share OTP: Sometimes, the fraudsters ask gullible customers to share the OTP under the guise that it has been “mistakenly sent to them”or to render a service that the customer might be seeking. As soon as the OTP is shared, they are able to siphon-off money from the victim’s account.
· Never click on a link for making any payment: With spurt of e-commerce sites and aggregators many incidents of frauds through these platforms have proliferated. The modus-operandi is as follows:
o Say you post a picture of a wardrobe you want to sell, a buyer would contact you and ask you to ‘accept’ the payment link that they sent you. Once you click it you will receive debit notification/s in the text.
o You expressed your displeasure about a food that was ordered by a food aggregator or any service provided by travel/ transport aggregators on Social Media. You receive a call from a person claiming to be from the aggregator wishing to redress your grievance. He sends you a link through text or Whatsapp and claims that your money would be refunded once you click that link and provide the information. Once the link is clicked, the information is used to get access to your account. You receive a notification that money has been debited from your account.
UPI is one of those modes which has ‘push’ as well ‘pull’ function, which means not only can send the money but also ‘collect’ the money from other person. This collect facility is one of the most preferred modes of defrauding customers. If someone initiates a ‘Collect’ request, and you authorize the same, the funds from your account will go into the sender’s account. If one unknowingly ‘confirms’ such Collect request from a fraudster, the account will be debited immediately.
